Scene: The killer whale scene

If you want to take a look at the killer whale scene I put a link with the xml and the sd to check. It is for RF2012.

    1. Hi,

      You can render the particles with any render engine loading the particles as objects instances and rendering them. Another possibility is to mesh the particles and render this mesh with any render engine again. You can do it with Krakatoa too. 🙂


  3. Very generous Luis. I like idea of using the domain setup to create the main surface break/interaction.
    The splash system isnt doing anything/cant get it working however. It appears to just hang and crash/freeze. The grid domain is simmed and set to cache. i must have something incorrectly activated here?

      Splashes take long time depending of the configuration you have in the scene, but if you are calculating the GFD with the Source to “From field” and the Calculate Surface to “Always”, once simulated put the last one parameter to cache and the GFD node to cache and calculating splashes should be faster. 😉

  6. Hola Luis, tengo un problema y no consigo encontrar la solución. He simulado todo, incluido foam y splash y cuando añado un grid mesh y le doy a build meshes hace el proceso muy rapido, total que abro esas mallas con maxwell y es como si no hubiera nada. A parte sólo ocupan 1kb. He llegado a la conclusion que no se estan generando las mallas logicamente pero no tengo ni idea de como hacer que sí. Ojala me puedas ayudar! Gracias de antemano!

      Si echas un vistazo al tamaño de los ficheros seguramente no tengan niguna informacion, es decir, que pese 1K o similar. Eso es porque no se te esta generando la mesh. ¿Te has fijado que tengas en la pestaña Surface del GridFluidDomain, los parametros “Calculate…” puestos en Always?

      If you take a look at the file’s size, you will be able to see that they don’t have any information, it means, they’ll have 1K or similar. The main reason is because the mesh is not generated when building in RealFlow. Are you sure you have the “Calculate…” parameters for the Surface tab in the GridFluidDomain, put to “Always”?.

  7. Hola Luis, tengo un problema de mallas y es que al hacer el splash se me queda como muy abultada, como si las olas tuvieran un sombrero para que me entiendas, como podría hacerlo para que se quedara como una tela?

    1. Hola,

      tienes que seleccionar el GridFluidDomain and jugar con los parametros del tab surface. Primero pon los “Calculate…” a “Always” y luego selecciona “From particles” en el parametro “Source”. Si quieres que sea mas fina la malla, modifica tambien el valor para “Auto cell size”.

      You must select the GridFLuidDomain and play with the surface parameters. First, you should put the “Calculate…” parameters to “Always” and then selecting “From particles” for the “Source parameter”. If you wanna a thin mesh, you should modify the “Auto cel size” parameter as well.

    1. Hi Himanshu,

      Did shark have a fast movement when moving? Could you check the Min and Max substeps you have in your scene? If the particles are exploding the Max substeps might be too low.


  8. Thanks for the scene!
    I´m curious about the KillVolume2 that is connected to the GFD.. When I use that my particles slowly sinks down through it when the whale starts to jump.. So I end up with no water particles…

    I have the latest build – have something changed in the way killVolume works?


    1. Hi Daniel,

      Keep in mind that the Kvolume has a “Inverted” parameter. I don’t remember now, but maybe that parameter is inverted and the particles only will be killed if they are touching the kvolume daemon.

    Very good the content of this blog. Keep it up with the amazing work. I’m having some issues (link bellow)when I tried to simulate a whale splashing. As the whale is already inside the Grid Domain, I need to put the emitter on top of GFD and wait a while to particles settle down. After that, I unlocked the whale animation and particles at the bottom starts to get speed (in my opinion with no trigger) and go up really strong. I’ve tried to use a drag force bounded to avoid this behavior, but with no success. Do you have some idea of what it is? Thanks in advance!


    1. Hey,

      I see that the whole has a lot of polygons. Are you sure that the whole is properly closed?. If the mesh is opened it could be the cause for that problem due to the mesh is not voxelizing properly.

  10. Hi Luis,

    This scene is a huge help to learn how to work with animated meshes! I’ve tried to recreate this scene from scratch with similar settings. I read all of the comments above. I am getting stuck on frame 28 of the splash. It slightly explodes and then stops simulating. I’ve tried a number of different changes, but same result. Any suggestions? Thank you! Will

    1. Hi will,

      Try to increase the number of substeps. By default they are 1 for minimum and 333 for maximum. Do you have a different number for them. They are in the simulation options.

      Unfortunately that scene was made in RealFlow 2012 and now, the same scene would have a different setup for RealFlow 2013. If you need help to understand the setup with RF2013, please, let me know.


  11. Hi Luis. Can you help me figure out what is happening to the mesh? I am using your scene file for the simulation:

      The problem is the geometry is not rasterized properly. If you try to show the Isosurface for the whale geometry in some frame which the problem is happening, the isosurface should be appearing with some artifact. Check it out and let me know.
