Tutorials: Rendering the RealFlow displacement with Maxwell, inside 3D Studio Max.

Hi all!,

A new tutotial to show how to use the new realflow displacement by using the MaxwellRender for 3dsmax.

NOTE: It was made in 3dsmax 2013 and you can see the plugin for RealFlow  installed in 3dsmax , but it is just the beta. It will be soon.

  1. Really helpful, thank you for your good tutorial!

  2. Hi. thank you for this helpfull tuotrial. However I have a problem. I’ve done everything you described but realflow is exporting the displacement map with a very small resolution eventhough I have set “calculate texture” and 1024 for the “@resolution” parameter. What could be the problem ?

    thank you in advance

    • Hey,

Could you paste a screenshot with the realwave and the parameter for @resolution? What size do you have for your realwave?

      luisM.

      • In fact I just created a default realwave in a default scene and added a statistical spectrum.i scaled it to be 10×10 as in your tutorial .Other than that, I just set calculate texture to yes an put 1024 for @resolution. In this configuration it’s outputing a displacement texture with a resolution of 100*115. Of course if I scale up the realwave or decrease the polygon size, the displacement map resolution increase proportionally, which seems logical. However, it’s seems different from what you presented. It’s not really a big issue for me right now but I just found that strange.

Thanks for your reply anyway its really nice that you took the time.

thanks for all those cool tutorial and I’m wating for more info about realflow 2013.

      • Hey!

Do you have the scene to take a look?. It is weird if you are doing the same that the tutorial and it is not changing the resolution.

        Thanks

        luisM. :)

  3. muy bueno gracias luis, un saludo.

There was a problem with the NetRender issue but it was fixed. Have you seen if they have installed the last plugin?. There was another user with the same issue and it was related with the permissions writing and transferring in the own network.

  5. how can i use the whitecap channel in the displacement map with my maxwell shader? i tried use alpha but the coverage seems to be way too dominant (much more compared to what can be seen in the realflow viewport)

    • Hey Chrish,

In order to use the whitecap image you’ll need to put it as an opacity map inside the layer params. Check the weight you have for other layers as well in that material. For example, if the first layer you have in the material, is a white with the whitecap for the opacity map to define a foam, you may add another layer to define the water material. So, both layers should have a 50 of weight for both layers.

  6. hi wanted to know how to create smorganic effect within realflow can u please help on this

    • Hi ajay!

Have you tried the sheeter daemon included in RealFlow? It is a filler of particles if there are holes for the particle simulation.

      luisM.

      • thanks for ur reply . i tried the sheeter daemon but i am not getting the exact look wat i want when i want to make paint droplet falling and creating a string like effect example http://youtu.be/MY2rpuef0w0
        thanks

      • Hi ajay,

Depending on the scale for your scene the sheeter should be working fine for this kind of scenes. Try to put “Max cavity size” 3 and “Cavities detection ratio” to 0.3.

  7. Hi Luis.
I am using a displacement tif sequence in my Hybrido scene, see link below,I’ve created it in Realflow 2012 :

and works fine , if i render one frame, but it is a 500 frames sequence and in the displacement tab at my water material , if I turn on the sequence option , Maxwell gives me an error telling me it can’t find
the file , none of the 500, if I turn it off it will render only the first frame /
    can you help me ?

  8. Luis , you can find a more detailed explanation and pictures

It is not clear whether you want the scene either cm or meters. I think that the easier way to see if you need meters for your scene, will be putting a 100 value for the global scale in the Maxwell parameters. It is 1 by default. It will make a scale up per 100 for the full scene in render time and you don’t need to change others parameters. The plane goes far away due to you have a small scale for your scene and the displacement values are very high for the scale you have for your scene.

      luisM. ;)

Yes, I mean the maxwell preferences. If you want, send me a link to download the scene and I can check it.

      Un saludo.

  11. I’m not that much of a online reader to be honest but your blogs really nice, keep it up!
I’ll go ahead and bookmark your website to come back later on. All the best
